Although close to the town of Milford, and easily accessed from there, Loch Colmcille is a remote and tranquil location in an area which is rich in history and wildlife. The route to and from Milford is along footpath and quiet roads, whilst the 2.5 km section to the east of the Loch is along a disused road which is not accessible to cars.

Glenveagh Castle is a 19th century castellated mansion and was built between 1867 and 1873. Its construction in a remote mountain setting was inspired by the Victorian idyll of a romantic highland retreat. John Townsend Trench, a cousin of its builder and first owner, John George Adair, with whom he had been raised in County Laois, designed it. Although not a professional architect, Trench had a hand in at least one other building: he designed the Gothic town hall in Arklow, built in 1878.

Situated on the N56, between Creeslough and Dunfanaghy, Ards Forest Park is probably the most beautiful and certainly the most varied of Ireland's Forest Parks. 480 hectares in extent it contains a large diversity of plant and wildlife forms. Sandy beaches, rivers, viewing points, nature walks, picnic and play areas.
Hours can be spent here in complete relaxation, be it on the many nature walks or on its golden beaches. It is a place for everyone to get away for a while.
